Fall Immunizations at Somerset Primary Care

Fall is on the way and with Fall we can expect those pesky fall viruses to be lurking around the corner. The Fall viruses of concern are Influenza, RSV, and Covid. Each of these viruses migrates around the world and reappears in a slightly different fashion each fall season.

The bad news is that they all cause a range of illnesses from mild to deadly with the youngest children, people over 50, and people with chronic health problems bearing the worst consequences.

The good news is that there are safe and effective vaccines for each of these conditions. We generally recommend getting the vaccines for everyone in order to limit the spread and strongly recommend that people in the high-risk groups get all three vaccines.

For children the Flumist seems to be the best and easiest to administer. High risk and older adults should get the high intensity Flu vaccine. The RSV is needed only once- not an annual vaccine.

The Covid vaccine is an annual vaccine since this virus continues to mutate. The good news is that Covid is far less severe consequences in terms of hospitalization and death compared to the 2019/2020 strains. This is in part due to the fact that almost everyone has already been exposed and has some immunity. Still, high risk individuals would benefit from Covid vaccination to avoid hospitalization and death.

There are treatments available for these viral illnesses but need to be given very early in the course of the illness to be effective and are not a substitute for prevention.
