Healthy Eating for a Healthy Life: Understanding Ultra-Processed Foods
Somerset Primary Care is continuing our Facebook community health education with a
series on “Healthy Eating for a Healthy Life.”
The first edition was posted last week introducing Ann LeBarron, Registered Dietician
and nutritionist who has joined our staff to provide individual counseling and
community education.
This week’s edition is on ultra processed foods. Ultra processed foods are foods that are
created by the food industry that use methods for preserving the food that differ from
the traditional methods of canning, freezing, drying or pickling. The food industry uses a
variety of food dyes, artificial flavors and chemicals to make food more shelf stable and
also fats, sugar and salt to make increase our brains attraction to these foods.
The result of the use of these foods over decades is one of the main causes for obesity,
cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
Over the coming weeks we will discuss how to incorporate healthy foods into our diets
and move away from those foods that are harmful.
